About the Spray

The Spray Newspaper is published weekly by the students of Fairhaven High School, 12 Huttleston Avenue, Fairhaven, MA 02719, Tel: 508-979-4051, ext. 5011, Fax: 508-979-4140.

The Spray (print version) is typeset in a Times typeface using MS Word 97 and Pagemaker 6.5 software. Photographs are scanned and cropped using Canon LIDE and Adobe Photoshop 7.0 LE software. The paper is printed by PrintSmart of New Bedford.

The Spray encourages reader response. We will print all signed letters so long as they are neither slanderous nor libelous.

Release schedule: Dependant on class meeting times, per semester.
Typical Timetable 3-4 weeks before publication: Story meetings are held 2-3 weeks before publication: Reporters conduct interviews, research, and write article(s), create cartoons, and/or take photos 2 weeks before publication: All submissions are due 10 days before publication: Layout begins for editors 2-3 days before publication: Paper sent to publishers Please note: Special workshops may be offered over the course of the year for Lightning Press staff to learn or refresh on such areas as effective news writing and layout. Staff will be notified by e-mail of workshop dates; workshops are not mandatory.

Jo-Anne Charette - Advisor

Jo-Anne has been an educator for 21 years, 14 of which was as an English teacher at a vocational school. She has been at Fairhaven High School for the last seven years as the TV Media teacher where she teaches journalism and print media. She holds a Master’s Degree in Occupational Education from Fitchburg State College and is working toward a second degree through Bridgewater State College master’s program in Technology. She has had educational opportunities recently including a 14-day seminar at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina (summer 2005), a 4-day JEA conference in Chicago (fall 2006), and a Teaching Activities grant through BCC (summer 2007) for web site design.
