In order to improve student achievement and promote a commitment to lifelong learning for all students, school counselors at FHS will provide programs, classroom-based interventions and group and/or individual counseling that focus on the development of attitudes, knowledge and skills necessary for success in higher education, the workplace and other post-secondary options, use district/school data to design and deliver counseling programs and services, and are informed by participation on school improvement teams and the development of school improvement plans.
Options for students who may need help with academics:
1.Stay after once a week with teacher(s) until grades improve: Teachers are available after school for extra help Monday through Thursday (with the exception of the first Thursday of every month, when faculty meetings are held). Students should have specific questions from a class lesson or homework that are unclear in order for teachers to know how best to help.
2.Check the X2 grading website weekly: Students and parents have an X2 login username and password to access student grades and assignments. The web address for X2 is fairhaven-x2.org. Mozilla Firefox is the recommended web browser. If the account is disabled, please contact the Guidance office to have the account reset.
3.Parent/Guardian to initiate contact with student’s teachers: Either via a phone call to the high school or through email. Teachers’ email address is their (first initial last name)@fairhavenps.org.
4.Attend the FOCUS group: FOCUS meets after school in the library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (late bus days) from 2 PM to 3 PM. FOCUS is led by other students available to help study for a quiz/test, complete a writing assignment, or simply get organized. FOCUS starts the week of October 17th.
5.Consider student initiated weekly or bi-weekly progress reports: These progress reports are located in Guidance, and it is the student’s responsibility to retrieve the forms. Students give to teachers for completion, which can then be shared with parents/guardians.
6.Consider a one-to-one peer tutor: Guidance can introduce a student in need of tutoring to an upperclassman who has shown strength in a particular subject. If choosing this option, please see us in guidance.
