Middle School Pathway Exploration Policy

In accordance with Massachusetts state regulations (603 CMR 4.00), sending districts must maintain a districtwide Middle School Pathway Exploration Policy. This policy outlines how middle school students are made aware of, and gain exposure to, career technical education (CTE) schools and programs available at district, regional, agricultural, and other public high schools.

FPS High School Pathway Options
High School Pathway Options for Fairhaven Public Schools (FPS) Students

Students enrolled in Fairhaven Public Schools are eligible to explore and pursue the following high school CTE pathway options:

  • Fairhaven High School Career Pathway: Business and Finance
  • Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School - Additional Info
  • Bristol County Agricultural High School

All FPS students participate in the MyCAP (My Career and Academic Plan) process, which is implemented districtwide in grades 6–12.

As students create and update their MyCAP profiles, they are guided to connect their personal interests, strengths, and goals with available high school options. This ensures alignment between students' educational experiences and their future career aspirations.

Middle School Exploration

Middle school students engage in structured activities that promote exploration and awareness of secondary school options, including CTE and agricultural programs. Through the MyCAP process, students are encouraged to:

  • Identify their strengths and interests
  • Set short- and long-term academic and career goals
  • Take ownership of their learning pathways

FPS is committed to ensuring that all students and families are informed about available high school CTE options and how to access them.

  • Coordinate with partner schools to facilitate student tours of CTE and agricultural programs
  • Share required student information with receiving schools in compliance with Massachusetts General Law
  • Ensure all students actively engage with the MyCAP process
Middle School CTE Tour Protocol

FPS will collaborate annually with partner CTE and agricultural schools to schedule on-site student tours during the school day.

  • A shared calendar and tour schedule will be developed in partnership with receiving schools
  • Student attendance for tours will be tracked and confirmed by the receiving school
  • Students attending approved tours will receive an excused absence and will not be penalized
Providing Student Records with CTE and Agricultural Schools

Fairhaven Public Schools will:

  • Provide all required school and student information to receiving CTE/agricultural schools in accordance with state law
  • Maintain open lines of communication between FPS counselors/administrators and partner schools
  • Ensure all requested student information is shared in a timely manner
Maintenance of Records

The Elizabeth Hastings Middle School Counseling Department will:

  • Maintain all communications, documentation, tour attendance records, and related materials
  • Identify and share a designated FPS point of contact for partner schools prior to September 1 each school year
Appendix

The FPS MyCAP process enables all students to engage in career exploration, identify personal and career interests, set academic and professional goals, and chart a clear path toward achieving them. MyCAP is a foundational element of our strategy to ensure every student is informed about and prepared for CTE and agricultural high school opportunities.
