Fairhaven High School welcomes a new Red Blossom Tree to campus.

Getting hands dirty
On a brisk April morning, students from Fairhaven High School's environmental studies class joined Fairhaven's Tree Warden and representatives from Eversource to plant two Eastern Red Bud Trees to commemorate 2022's Earth Day.

"We're going to make them a part of the biology program going forward to track the seasonal changes." Mrs. Cari Mailloux, Environmental Science teacher said.

The Eastern Red Bud trees red blossoms will indicate how early or late the seasons change, and Fairhaven High School's biology students will now be able to track in real-time the changing of climates.

"Now more than ever trees are important to us." Fairhaven Tree Warden Don Callasius told Fairhaven High School students. "With the global acknowledgement of climate change, trees are a fantastic way to mitigate the carbon we're putting into the atmosphere by taking some out." Callasius continued.

"I'm actually really proud of all the students. They are working hard." Mrs. Mailloux exclaimed. It's a great community involvement, and it's great the town got these guys involved. These guys will become a legacy forever. They can tell their children and grandchildren they planted these trees one day."

Principal Andy Kulak thanks the alumni association and the town for donating the trees to Fairhaven High School stating it will be a "great addition to the campus. A beautiful addition to an already beautiful campus, and we look forward to many years watching the trees grow."

Students got a first hand lesson from landscapers who taught students how to dig and move soil, level the trees, and mulch the trees with fertilizer. Students also walked away from the event with baby red maple saplings, courtesy of Eversource.

The trees can be seen on Fairhaven High School's front southern lawn, on both sides of the flagpole's walkway.
